I am glad that I had found a job at Popular Bookstore! My working environment is actually in a small shop in Pei Chun, that sells books and stationery. My job is actually to pack books and stationery into ready packets, replenish stock , stock-taking and finally pick items for customers. Sometimes, it would definitely requires a lot of strength and energy. Working life has been really tedious but it's all under control. There will always be awesome colleagues always willingly to help each other out. By the way, my job is a six day work: Mon -Fri, 8.30am to 2.30pm; Sat 8.30am - 1pm. I am paid $6/hr. I feel that I am paid at a reasonable rate, as the working hours is quite short. One thing I love is that I am still able to have my own private time and family time. I guess I will carry on my job til the end of January 2014....

Secondary school is the place where we make our close friends in life, have our first crush, compete to excel, hope for places in the sports teams, eating the cheapest food during breaks, and learn important lessons about life. I have heard from many people that the days spent in secondary school are the happiest and the best days of our life. Remember those times when you and your friends literally race to the canteen when the recess bell rings or randomly doodling on friend’s worksheets to bring about their laughter? The very memory of school days fills our minds with nostalgic memories of happy days of the past. We definitely have different fond memories of our secondary school days….. I studied in Bartley Secondary School, located along a quite road named Jalan Bunga Rampai. My school commences its classes at 8 a.m., and official dismissal time is at 1.30p.m. However, as we are in secondary school, we usually have after school lessons till 3pm. Then after is our Co- curricular activities time. Co- curricular activities time is a means to enhance social interaction, leadership, healthy recreation, self-discipline and self-confidence. I was in Audio Visual Club, that is where I am able to learn leadership skills (such as event management and coordinating performances) organization skills (such as setup of lightings and sound systems), providing media support to all school functions and morning assembly. Being a honorary secretary of AVA back then, I remembered that I dare not skip any of the trainings or events. Coming to social interaction, I am sure everyone has their own group of close friends. Friends are the trustworthy ones where I can count on and accept me for whom I am. Friends are like angels who will always help and care for me, giving me inspiration at the same time. I would say lower secondary days were fun and carefree, mixed with the fear of bringing my report book home once a term. Upper secondary days were the best. . All those subject that I hated the most (history and music) were gone. Even though, I can’t deny that my secondary three and four class had gone through all the crap happenings as well as drama within the period of two years. We used to gossip and sometimes fight over silly things. At the same time, we did also have our own inner jokes to bring up the class spirit. That was my life of a secondary school student until the mid-year of 2013. Then after, my school hours completely extended until 5pm to prepare for the upcoming O’Levels. During this period utmost importance is given to academic pursuit. Additional clarification class were held regularly with weekly tests. Hence, out of sudden everyone turns into a mugger. Those times had passed, graduation day came. This marks the end of my 4 years in Bartley. One important thing I must point out is that no matter how many conflicts, dislikes or whatever negative things that had ever occurred, when it came to the final moment today, all that didn't matter, they were forgiven and forgotten. We are all brothers and sisters after all. The graduation ceremony was simple but meaningful, looking back at those memories that we have shared together. I will never forget the ceremony. Coming to this moment, I realise the basic truth of school. Now I know that the authorities of my school try to instil in us, the basic values of life such as, discipline, honesty, punctuality, dutifulness, respect to elders, being good-mannered, personal cleanliness, etc. My secondary school days has the memories that I can cherish and treasure for life. School days are the most joyful and funfilled with many mysteries to solve and many fights to resolve. We found fun in subtle but beautiful things. It was surely surrealistic but was also hilarious at times.I really wanna thank all my teachers and class mates in being together in this journey of my life! Thank you for everything that you've done throughout the past 4 years. (: P.S Dear readers, please share with me your memories of your secondary school days in the comment box below. I am looking forward to read them. While I was packing the house, I found like 30 forgotten photo albums in one of the old cabinets. Being the curious me, I went to look through all of them. Then, I spent the the next hour reminiscing about the past and laughing at all the pictures. Everyone will reach a point in their lives where they'd reminisce about the past, and the people who lived in them. I found pictures of myself in kindergarten, my first day of primary school, celebrating my birthdays and so many other memorable moments. I was so innocent and so cute. I can only wonder what happened to me. Honestly, I'd give anything to go back to that time. I miss the innocence of my childhood. I miss being cheeky and getting away with it. I miss waking up to having my parent's peanut butter bread for breakfast. I miss playing block catching with my neighbors. I miss sneaking to my neighbor's house to play without anyone's knowledge. I miss the air conditioned classrooms in kindergarten. I miss learning how to ride the bike with my father. I miss playing hide & seek. I miss playing hopscotch. I miss playing soccer with my neighbours. I miss knowing that love only meant family. I miss being happy over the simplest things in life.
I wish I never grew up. I am from AVA Club and Class Committee Council (CCC). I was AVA Secretary and Level Representative in CCC. Time passes so fast and in May 2013 I am stepping down to concentrate in my studies for my O Levels. Let me recall those special moments I spent in CCA through a photo memory lane.... I am Yong Wei, aka YWOLOGIST. This year I am fifteen, studying at Bartley Secondary School.
Since I was in sec one, I have the same dream as BT becoming a radio DJ on Hot FM 91.3! Out of curiosity, I joined Audio Visual Aid (AVA) club to learn how to operate equipment such as Channel Strip, Master Section on the mixer board, introduction to microphones and their uses, wireless Systems, equalising, introduction to different types of cables, miking voice and instruments, microphone selection and placement and basic mixing. I observed that those are the basic equipment that radio DJ uses that inspired me to have interest in. I am planning to take mass communication in poly to learn more about the job of radio DJ. That is a shirt introduction about my ambition! Have you ever thanked radio crews before? To be honest, I haven’t really did that before.
But I would like to take this opportunity, before the end of 2012, to thank them for all their hardwork. As a frequent radio listener, I will do shout outs to Hot FM 91.3 DJs. Below is my message: I want to tell you how much I appreciate the many hours of service the DJs dedicated to entertain the public on air. Your contributions make a real difference! It brings joy and laughter to my life. I really enjoy those moments. The first thing, I wake up is to tune into Hot FM 91.3 to listen to The Married Men. They are group of comedian DJs. They would create jokes out of nowhere through their way of talking. I feel that the best part of the morning show is KENA PLUCK! They would prank call other people with a fake accent. As a listener, it is hilarious to listen how both parties will react. I just can’t stop laughing with you guys. Maybe, I have gone crazy with your! Moving on to the night show, it is another segment where I will laugh till my jaws drop. They are the Hot 30 Countdown, by Boy Thunder and Adam. Boy Thunder would always make fun and troll around with Adam’s hairy body and his weird behaviour. Besides that, they are always playing hottest songs in town. For your extra information, I enjoy texting in for free to request songs. This brings me smiling into my dreams. I am personally impressed with the way Hot FM 91.3 kept on moving forward to entertain me without fail. Hence, I am inspired to join your team of DJs to create a happy atmosphere. Talking about that, I am only fifteen years old. Can you take me in as Hot FM 91.3’s student? Thank you for giving this company your best. May you enjoy this type of success in Hot FM 91.3’s future endeavours! Time flies so fast and 2013 is coming around the corner. As stated by the book named “7 habits of highly effective teens”, Habit 2: Begin With The End In Mind, it's time for me to write down my new year's resolutions. I will need to set my many achievable targets and ways to reform my bad study habit.
I am a student taking my O Levels in 2013. Being a final year student, I must have a picture in my mind of how my final results will turn out, before I can pursue my tertiary education in Singapore Polytechnic . I have to take my studies extremely seriously, to perform well in the national exams. There will not be any more time for me to fool around… I have my personal motto: Personally driven to achieve a good outcome; don’t do it for the heck of it. This shows how serious I am when writing my 2013 Resolution. I really want to remove away my bad study habit- checking my iPhone every now and then, before I am able to get back to my studies again. Spending two hours without electronics might sound easy for most, but for me, it produces an anxious feeling. I feel that my iPhone is taking away my precious time that I should spent on studies. Hence, I have planned to lock electronics in a cupboard that is out of reach during my study time. I will slowly train myself to kick away my electronics addiction. With electronics out -of –reach, it is a free from distraction and I will be more productive in my studies. I better change my messy habit in 2013. Instead, I will keep my room clean and tidy throughout entire year. Books and stationery are organised into proper categories, and be placed neatly in a fixed place. Also, keeping all books free from doodling and repair any damage promptly. This is will allow me to be in a serene mood for study. I must learn to practice effective study techniques. I will review notes before and after class, so that I am prepared to ask teachers about my unsure concepts during the next lesson, rather than waiting until just before an exam. Besides that I will learn to do the most difficult work first, perhaps breaking it up with some easier tasks, in order to complete all assignments on time. Apart from increasing my study hours, I want to have at least six hours per week set aside for exercise and family get together. I feel that it is important to continue to stay healthy and have close relationship with family members, even during exam time. This is to help me to reduce my study stress, adding some joy into my study life. To sum up, 2013 I need to excel in my studies and strive to be a good, kind, caring, productive person. Since my 2013 goals are simple and realistic, I will take actions to achieve all my goals. Deeds not words! As I am writing, the sky is getting darker… Ladies and gentlemen, brace yourselves, as the god of heaven pour buckets of water down from the sky! The weather might sometimes be sunny and hot one moment and incredibly rainy with loud rumbling thunder sound the next. Singapore is experiencing the wet phase of Northeast Monsoon during the whole month of December, where you will witnesses continuous moderate to heavy rainfall in the afternoons and early evenings. For my dad, he definitely loves the rainy season. The weather turns cold and suitable weather for one to give an excuse to wear thick layered clothing. But most of the time it just makes him want to stay home and soon fall asleep. It is so nice to sleep late and snuggle under the blanket. The warmth allowed him to sleep almost the whole Sunday and have a chore to wake up on the next day for work. Whereas for beach lovers, when skies turn grey and the rain falls, they often find themselves bored and cranky. Their planned beach activities will be completely ruined! With no shining sun to greet them, they will have a miserable and disappointed feeling. Apart from the fun and cool climate that rainy season brings, it invites lot of illness for people with weaker immune system as well. Cold and flu are common illness that is found in rainy season and this is usually due to fluctuation in the temperature. These weaker people need to be extra-careful during rainy season to prevent from falling sick. Here are some health tips: 1. Always keep rain gear with you such as umbrellas and raincoat, in your backpack when you go out in rainy season. 2. Increasing the intake of Vitamin C maybe as food supplement will help you drive away the cold virus faster, by activating your antibodies and reduce the severity of cold, undoubtedly. 3. Taking a shower after you have been caught in rain will protect you from many infections. 4. After you come back home caught in a rain, take a shower, dry yourself and wear dry and clean clothes. The best thing is to make a hot cup of drink for yourself. This will help you from catching cold or save you from catching any kind of infection that can occur due to sudden change in the temperature of the body. 5. Cleanliness is very important during rainy season. Even if you catch a cold, you should clean your hands regularly and use a sanitizer always after that. 6. It is good to drink plenty of water and do not wait to get thirsty to drink water. This will help you drain toxins from your body. In short, we must watch out our intake, try to eat nutritious food and avoid eating out during rainy season. Prepare meal with full precaution and maintain health and hygiene throughout the house. I will end of a song by Bruno Mars- It will rain. Enjoy! There is supposed to be some catastrophe in 2012, according to several doomsday predictions. But it hasn't happened yet. I propose it was only end of the year that came, unfulfilled invention mission transformed into a future hope for myself. My mission: Serve myself and others with a passion for innovation, and creating possibilities through invention. Just like any other teenagers, we all will have wishes/dreams for the New Year. My dream for 2012 was to come out with a useful inventions that will bring convenient and smiles to people. I wanted to be an inventor. It was the annual Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Award that inspired me to take up the dreams of an inventor, constantly think of new and creative ways of solving problems with my skills and knowledge. I knew that as long as I have the desire, I can become an inventor. No special education or experience is necessary to break into this career and succeed. But I really regretted not being able to come up with any useful ideas throughout the entire 2012. Since it is never too late to start, 2013 will definitely be the year for my invention. I will try to come out with a useful product. It could be a simple product that is able to help the handicap in carry out daily household activities. Even if my invention of a new product may not change the world, on a scale such as the iPod or iPhone have in many ways. I feel that going through the inventing process, thinking of ideas, are still worth having. We can all daydream and imagine big ideas, and encourage each other, not to laugh at each other. This is because any of us could have the next great idea. Well, all my ideas will be down in my design journal… Many people dream of being inventors, but only the most curious, creative, and persistent will actually become successful. I am the one.
I believe 2013 is the year where my dreams will come through, becoming an amazing inventor. Time passes so fast. It is already December, the last month of 2012. The holidays are just around the corner! During this festive season, there are many parties, restaurant visits and family dinners ahead. With so many food-sharing occasions to look forward to, sometimes I find it difficult to make healthy choices. I will never be able to avoid eating dessert, appetizers, chips, cake, pie and all the other scrumptious delights that will line the tables at all the festive get-togethers. Take a look below at the Christmas menu from Swensens and you will know what how delicious the food are. Well, maybe you don't have to avoid them completely. Just remember to follow the following steps: 1.Plan ahead. Before heading out, plan what you will eat and how much. Use your blood sugar values and physical activity for that day as a guide. It is important to take a good look at the menu, which will help you to make good and healthy choices. 2.Healthy Eating - Everything in Moderation It's just a matter of "everything in moderation." Instead of piling your plate with turkey, log cakes and all the fixings, ask for smaller portions. The best recommendation is to drink lots of water or eat lots of vegetable if you're still hungry after dinner. 3.Healthy Eating - Tasty Alternatives Drink fruit juice or water instead of soft drinks during the holidays. You can have the most one glass of soft drinks. Suggest to your parents, friends and relatives to order or make a fruit juice punch for Christmas or New Year's meal. It'll be a tasty alternative that everyone will want to try! 4. Wait several minutes before tucking into your next portion Put the cutlery down between bites, or talk to people between portions. If you are looking to finish off a second helping of anything, try taking a short break first. You may find yourself no longer hungry after that. Of course not forgetting that we must carry out exercise regularly. Did you know that regular exercise can help you save on health care costs in the long run? If you have not started exercising habit, take inspiration from Subway Santa to have a fitter 2013! You are able to catch the motivational commercial on televison very soon. A day after Christmas, I must up my exercise regimen significantly. I need to increase my runs from 3 days a week to 5, and running at least 50 km a week. I will run from Toa Payoh to Bishan and back to Toa Payoh again. If I miss a session, I will be doing some workout in the gym with my friends. This is to burn down my calories and avoid holiday weight gain. Above is another inspiring video that shows the transformation of a guy who did not give up exercising! He managed to slim down a lot in the end. I know of a person who started to exercise regularly, either swimming or attending Zumba lessons. She recently lost 33 kilos in a few months! She is Ms Koh, my ex-AVA teacher! Compare the calories burn when doing different types of activity: (Table provided by whyiexercise.com) I suggest you all to carry out 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity (e.g brisk walking, swimming) or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity (e.g. running). You may even want to do strength training. Don't forget to look for little ways to burn more calories each day. You might be surprised to learn that it is possible to burn more calories simply by becoming more active in your daily life, taking the stairs, walking to school etc. As a student, I shall eat Subway's Turkey and Bacon Melt bread for my Christmas meal. It is some how a healthier, cheap and delicious option. One thing good about subway meal is that there are a lot of vegetables available. It ranges from lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, olives, pickles, cucumber slices,Green (bell) peppers, red onions, jalapenos, and shredded carrots. You may ask the sandwich artist to put in all the available vegetables into your meal. This makes the meal a more healthier one. In my opinion, Subway's Turkey and Bacon Melt bread brings me a joyful Christmas mood. Wondering how many calories are in Turkey and Bacon Melt? Take a look at what I found on the internet. I just wish one day I will be like Abercrombie and Fitch models, having a six-pack body!
